I am very pleased to offer this gorgeous antique piece of Savoyard pottery. This is a very traditional French form and is usually referred to as a “gargoulette” (gurgler) pitcher. It’s glaze treatment is also very traditional, a swirl of colors—in browns, buffs, and greens—called jaspé. The top of the handle bears the word “Souvenir” in raised relief and the body bears the words “Aix Les Bains” in relief. This treatment is created by applying a powdered glaze over a hand-cut stencil before firing. The clay body is red (terra cotta or terre cuite). Aix Les Bains has been a hot-spring spa in the Rhône-Alpes region near Switzerland for many centuries. The Romans were the first to construct baths there, and the popularity of the location has not waned since those days. Napoleon was known to relax there from time to time! This piece likely dates to around 1880 to 1900. It measures 9” tall and approximately 6 ½” in diameter at its widest point. There are no marks to identify the maker, not even so much as a number, so I can’t tell you who is responsible for this lovely piece! It is in superb condition with no chips, cracks, hairlines, or repairs. There is gentle crazing appropriate to its age, but it is not disfiguring. Shipping weight: 5 lb. 6 oz. (Location:D3)
